Chuck Boeri: training becomes part of life
The discipline that comes with training goes way beyond martial arts, says sixth-degree Small Circle Jujitsu black belt Chuck Boeri.
Chuck Boeri Sensei Chuck was among the first students at the New England Small Circle Jujitsu Academy.
"The discipline becomes part of what you do," he said.
Boeri is a successful printing and graphics-arts salesman for D.S. Graphics in Lowell. "You're pretty much on your own, so you need that discipline."
Serious training is an almost continuous process. Boeri, who has been with Sensei Ed Melaugh for more than ten years, admits he didn't train as much when his children were younger.
"Now, I'm in there between three and four times a week, usually for a couple hours. I've been married for over 25 years and I have an understanding wife."

Chuck and Sharon Boeri of Burlington have two daughters, both at college. Tanya, 19, is studying at Boston College and Nicole, 18, is at the University of Hartford. Boeri also has a black belt in Shorin Ryu, a Japanese karate.
"I was in my old system for about 18 years but I always felt there were pieces missing. It was very traditional; never varied much.
"I liked it but I knew there was something out there; I just didn't know what it was. Then I met Ed and saw what he was doing with Small Circle," Boeri said.
He saw the flexibility and adaptability of Small Circle Jujitsu.
"It's based more on principles; not on a particular technique. It works for big guys. It works for small guys. It works for children. It works for women."
What really matters
He said the most important thing he has learned is that what really matters is the people involved."I think that trickles down through the whole system. Look at Ed. Look at Prof. Jay. Nobody has a big ego here.
“In a lot of systems, you'd never find higher ranking instructors like Ed talking to white belts; helping out. They'd be two or three tiers down. Somebody of his caliber wouldn't be teaching a class."
